River Front Times review of Selected Short Works:

Singer-songwriter Joe Eisenbraun re-mains a mostly unknown figure around town who plays a show only every month or two - even though the solid, varied LP Selected Short Works marks his fifteenth release since 2001. The dude clearly has Bob Pollard-esque depths to plumb, but his talent justifies this prodigious output. Eisenbraun writes sharp, catchy songs that display wit and heart in equal measure, as they vacillate between nervy power-pop and pensive folk-rock. "To See You Again" pulses with new-wave energy and sounds like a lost Knack song, and "History" crunches along with a few nods to Cheap Trick. "Soft Rock Radio" is a highlight among the stripped-down numbers, marked by a circular banjo pattern and light drums, as Eisenbraun ruminates on the long-gone simplicity of grade-school love.

Like Billy Bragg's similarly minded Talking with the Taxman About Poetry, marriage is a focus of many of these tunes. Opener "Diamonds, Diapers & Property" considers the weight of family life and fiscal responsibility amid twangy guitar and wheezy organ chords. Things get darker (and funnier) with "The Day I Married Her," which finds a beleaguered husband looking back on 30 years of domestic blisters. The chorus, which states "If I killed her the day I married her, I'd be out of jail by now," is sure to be a favorite with fans of murder ballads and wry irony alike. A little too snarky for alt-country and a little too wistful for indie-rock, Eisenbraun finds a comfortable middle ground in between genres.

Unfortunately, the band & I parted ways. Really good players & good guys to have a beer with, I'm sorry to see them go.

So I'm booking solo acoustic shows. It's a whole different ball game, but also one I love.

Thanks to everyone who came to see us at The Koken Art Factory & The Way Out Club last week. Both shows were barrels of fun & the new record, Selected Short Works, is finally here. ::::patting myself on the back:::: Please stop by Vintage Vinyl to pick up a copy or come see us at Lemmon's next month!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to Cicero's for our summer-ending show. We thought it went really well. These days we're playing around with 6 or 8 tunes for the next record & thinking about a CD release party for Selected Short Works, which just came in & looks great. We'd like to send it out to community radio stations & maybe some record labels so if anyone wants to help with that do drop me a line. I hope you're all doig well.
Best, -Joe Eisenbraun

Please welcome Aaron Story playing drums: welcome, sir, back from the (almost) dead. We're serious about this band thing & we need a drummer so please sell your motorcycle.
Please welcome Karl Eggers on guitars, keys, banjos etc: We will love you in proportion to the frequency with which you play that Black Sabbath line.

New songs we're considering for the next record include:
  • Coy Looks & White Lies
  • Pedal Steel
  • The Other Marriage Song (that's a working title)
  • Carrying Sorrow
  • Left Right Left (we've rearranged this oldie but goodie from Essays In Pop)

Selected Short Works is off getting printed & we'd like to book a release show. Please send signed blank cheques for pre-order. More soon. I promise. Maybe.

There is much news: new songs, new bandmates, upcoming shows ...
4-29-07
We were happy to roadtrip to Truman State's Squirrelfest for Ben's last show with the band. He's going to be spending more time on his PhD thesis & with his wife & I affirm those priorities & wish him the best. He might sit in with us from time to time.

Things are still up in the air for the "new" record, although we got the masters back from Chicago last week & finished the cover art.

The line up for The Geiger Counter is also in a state of flux ... only time will tell.

So I've been writing new tunes, & reading about the band Badfinger, & trying to keep the floor swept.

& I bought a cell phone.

The times they are a changing.

February comes & goes. The old record is in our pocket: we're working on cover art & mastering. Another record is being written. We've been booking shows to play acoustic without a drummer. I'm frustrated about the drummer thing.

We need help. We need a drummer, & someone local to do graphic design work for flyers. I used tape & some old photos at Office Max to make flyers for the March Way Out Club show. It's not pretty but it'll do the trick.

Then my car broke down on the way home. So a drummer, a GDesigner & a car. Thanks for listening.

After many moons of searching, The Geiger Counter is at last joined by a trusty bass fellow. That means it's time to book some shows ... right after we cut another record. We did those 13 tracks in June & we're doing 6 more this week & hoping to have it mixed by February. Then the best 10 or 12 of the 19 will be a record. If anyone were interested in financially underwriting the next disc, we would be more than willing to think on it.

A more casual way of helping out: we'll be working 12 hour days Sat-Wed so if anyone would be willing to bring us cookies or make us lunch, that would be really nice. Or if anyone wanted to drop by for a spot of tea & hear what we're doing, it'd be fun to have folks around.

Best,
-Joe

Hello friends, fans, and strangers who read random blogs. If you have been keeping up with us you will know that since the departure of Robert and bassist Tyler, Eisenbraun & the Geiger Counter has had to make some changes, hence the temporary hiatus from any public appearances. As for Joe, he is feeling great and maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle. But enough about him, lets introduce the two new members of the group.

Drummer Nathan Larson hails from St. Louis, MO and has been making noise of some sort or another from most of his life. If you get a chance, and you should, check out his solo project Anhten Yaw on myspace. http://www.myspace.com/anhtenyaw

Then there is me, Ben. My contributions to the band include backing up Joe's incendiary guitar playing utilizing various guitars, keyboards, and banjos.

The only piece missing is a bass player. So if you or someone you love has an interest in becoming the next geiger counter drop us a line.

Last order of business is the new album. Still untitled, this will be the third release from Eisenbraun & the Geiger Counter. Several new songs are still being put together and we are all excited to get these new songs out to the public. The tracks include
  • To See You Again
  • Didn't Know that I Know
  • The Day I Married Her
  • Soft Rock Radio
  • History
  • The Cold of Winter
  • Two Things
  • The A.C. Song
  • Today I'm Gonna Miss You
  • 1 + 1 is 2
In the meantime, we would love to play your house party.
Thanks to all.
Joe, Nate, Ben

You may have noticed the band is on temporary hiatus as everything shifts: Robert is headed to Chicago for school, we're still working on Untitled Record #3 & we've got two possible new band folk to play with. I'm hopeful that in 6 or 8 weeks we'll all have a solid set down, including bunches of numbers from the as-yet-untitled record #3. Robert will take his computer to school & as I consider the necessary investment for the studio to replace it, I'm also thinking about a switch to Mac.

In the meantime I'll play your house show if you like.

Best,
-Joe

Last week we spent 5 days with Patrick Hunt in the studio, Robert's room with the walls & floor covered in blankets. We tracked 12 tracks that we'll keep, 9 tunes with 3 alternate versions. Some unexpected things happened. Songs take on a life of their own. Usually that's a blessing. The tunes are
  • I'd Like to See You Again
  • Didn't Know that I Know
  • The Day I Married Her
  • Soft Rock Radio
  • History
  • The Cold of Winter
  • Clear As a Bell
  • More to Say
  • Two Things
We're not going to mix & master for a couple months so we've got some time to maybe add a few more tunes, plus add some guest musicians & a couple solos to the equation.

We're looking forward to playing Columbia tomorrow & Lemmon's on Friday. Please come out & say hi.

5-14-06 10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad
Greetings kind folks of the internet,

A brief public service announcement -- call your mothers; it's mother's day.

Our new record "10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad" is available at Vintage Vinyl in St Louis and at all shows. We're really pleased with how it looks and sounds -- thanks especially to Greg MacNair (artwork, violins), Mark Taylor (cover art, back art) & Kathleen Thro (BGVs, accordian) & Patrick Hunt who mixed & helped track things & made sure we had the right microphones.

Thanks to everyone who came to the Kirksville shows & The Red Sea last night. We made some friends at Squirrelfest (www.MySpace.com/TheAquaticRecord.com) & played an impromptu show with them at The Info Shop in Kirksville. And they played with us at The Red Sea last night & we met some more fine folks (www.MySpace.com/Ottomen) & played yet more new tunes & the rock n roll was heard by all.

Tonight at practice I *think* we finished a new tune called History & it's gonna be a radio single, I swear. With History on the list we're looking at 12-17 tunes the new record. Its working title is Album #3. We're tracking June 10-15, maybe 10 or 12 hour days, hoping to do at least drums & bass, maybe guitars & keys too. Drop me a line if you want to bring us lunch one of those days.

4-25-06 & Essays In Pop
Thanks to everyone for coming out to Cafe Mattino last weekend ... the show was really well-attended & some great pieces were sold, & the quality of the work was encouraging.

It was also the release of our new CD Essays In Pop. Skip over to the multimedia page to hear some of the new songs. For the cover art, I went over to Kathleen Wyllie's house & looked at a bunch of her pieces & picked out some favorites. It was a treat to see more than 3 decades of diverse & engaging work. Kathleen's been a mentor to me for a decade & I'm grateful to her for use of the artwork & proud to have it on our CD. Some of her work is at Cafe Mattino if you want to see more. (www.CafeMattino.com)

I just got confirmation that our new disc 10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad is in the mail, so we'll have it at Truman State's Squirrelfest this weekend & at Vintage Vinyl next week.

We've also been scheduling recording sessions for this summer to track songs for the next record. We may re-record some out-of-print tunes from Cd-Rs, but the new tunes include:
  • Soft Rock Radio
  • Clear As a Bell
  • In a Time of Halogen
  • To Be My Love
  • Two Things
  • The Picture My Father Carries
  • Born That Day
  • The Cold of Winter
We're pleased with the new tunes & we'll be playing some of them at all our upcoming shows.

April 10, 2006
We're looking forward to playing Squirrelfest in a couple weeks because there'll be tons of people, snow cones, T-Shirts, & music all day.

The weekend of the 21st our new CD will be playing at an art opening for a group showing of Le Pouce & L'Orteille at Cafe Mattino in St Louis. See www.CafeMattino.com for info. The show opening will be Friday April 21st pm & Saturday April 22nd afternoon, but it will be up for a month. Lots of St louis artists I admire will also be showing work, including Greg MacNair, Mark Taylor, Aubrey Hawkes, & Kathleen Wyllie.

10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad will also be for sale if we have it by then ... we're expecting it next week or the week after, so we'll have it for sure by Squirrelfest.

Cheers, -Joe
February 8, 2006
We haven't posted much on the web, but much is afoot. We've made press kits, bumper stickers & postcards (if you want a press kit, just drop me a line). Robert did a complete overhaul on the www.JoeEisenbraun.com website & it includes new photos & 6 unreleased tracks from the 1st two records. We've also got 4 new tunes we've been writing & practicing for the 3rd record:
  • Clear as a bell
  • Two things
  • In a time of halogen
  • Soft rock radio
We want to call this record The Mix Tape, recording & arranging each song in a different style & doing some low-fi stuff; & maybe including a solo track without the band & a traditional tune too.

Thanks for listening.
-Joe
Plans for the new year include:

  • * finish & release a 3rd record
  • * play more shows out of town
  • * post live show recordings & interviews for download
  • * work on music video
  • * get more folks to record in the Nice Noise Studio -- maybe work on area compilation

Last night we got the rough mix from Patrick. It sounds great. You'll all buy one, right?

Anyone know a good place to get a CD mastered? I got 18 different quotes on getting it stamped, but it needs a little mastering first. We're working on the artwork & at this point I'm hopeful that we'll have everything finished by Christmas.

We also finished the untitled 10-track disc of all new material this week--except for guitar solos & BGV's. We might call it "Confessions & Nursery Rhymes" or "The Enthusiastic Confessions of a Bored 20-Something." I think we're going to burn CD-R's of it instead of getting it replicated 'cause it's kinda lo-fi & we're going to mix it ourselves (mostly Robert I hope). Maybe we'll release both CD's at once. At the show Thursday we'll play two sets including all the songs on both CD's.

Upcoming records
October 5, 2005
We've been recording for the next record, perhaps to be titled "Modest attempts at stadium rock anthems" or "Live from my parents' living room," & it will almost certainly include at least the following tracks:
  • The day I married her
  • Even the stars
  • Vegas to Alcatrez
  • Really what I like
  • Jesus beams
  • The night from the day
  • If she asks
  • Logic can't heal this heart
  • I didn't know that I know
Patrick is still mixing 10 Radio Singles ... & we should hear some of it later this month. We're still looking for a bass player but a second guitarist or keyboardist would also be a welcome addition, so likeminded musicians please say hi.

Ok, tonight I drop off the new tunes to Patrick to be mixed. Re-recording the same record was a real drag sometimes, but other times it was exactly what we needed; the record is better for it because we were able to get a much higher level of fidelity & because the parts developed & changed as we went. We caught some good moments & I'm pleased with the results.
10 Radio Singles & A Murder Ballad
June 7, 2005
The album has been shelved. We're starting from scratch & doing everything over. Patrick Hunt has agreed to help track & mix, & Jim Tudor will be doing some documenting. The studio has been upgraded enormously since we started recording, & Patrick is quite good so we're looking forward to the upcoming month. Drum tracking starts tomorrow.
New record... sometime...
June 1, 2005
Patrick Hunt came over Sunday & looked at the tracking we've done -- everything expect the BGV's I think. He'll mix it for us. He gave us some pointers for next time, & we start recording for the next disc next week.
10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad's track list might look like this:
  1. I Love You But Not Me
  2. So over you
  3. Karaoke love
  4. Headache heartbreak handshake goodbye
  5. Sugarcane
  6. The librarian song
  7. I'm not my best friend's best friend
  8. Julia
  9. Beautiful girl
  10. Here with me
  11. Last December
On the next disc we want to include
  • The day I married her, Love song #37, Vegas to Alcatrez, I didn't know that I know, Really what I like, Logic can't heal this heart, The night from the day
--& some others that aren't quite finished yet. At Lemmon's in a couple weeks we're hoping hoping to debut a couple of the new tunes.
The tunes on MySpace are unmixed demos, mostly without BGV's, for 10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad.
One last thing: I bought a Menatone Fish Factory a couple weeks ago, thanks to Jimmy Griffin & John Clements. I think it'll be all over this next disc.

Tentative tracks
March 13, 2005
We've started tracking for the new record, tentatively called "10 Radio Singles & a Murder Ballad," & I for one am ... well, quite hopeful. There are a bunch of new tunes & we're probably also going to re-record some oldies that we still play & need full band recordings of. The songs we're considering are also the possibilities for the upcoming shows:
  • Last December
  • I love you but not me
  • There's no honesty here (Beautiful girl)
  • Headache heartbreak handshake goodbye
  • Here with me
  • Julia
  • The librarian song
  • I'm not my best friend's best friend
  • Sugarcane
  • If she asks
  • Hey now honey
  • I didn't know that I know
  • Logic can't heal this heart
  • Girl I am so over you
  • Vegas or Alcatrez
  • Karaoke love

Update
November 10, 2004
It's been a while since the last post, & much is afoot. After losing bass players to Target, Brazil, school, & children, shows are being booked for the new 3-piece: Robert Eisenbraun on drums & vocals, Gordon McKinney on bass & vocals, Joe Eisenbraun on guitars & vocals. Were going to go for an Indie/Folk/Pop/Rock sound & see if we can pick up a keyboardist or lap steel player as we go. A new album is being talked about in hushed tones, & dreams are being dreampt. Sign up for the mailing list. Check the calendar. Tell a friend.
On the radio
December 3, 2003
This week local community radio station KDHX added Joe's self-titled disc to its library & to the greater St. Louis airwaves. Special thanks to Bob Reuter of Scratchy Records, & Nick Acquisto & his Space Parlor.
Self-titled release
December 2, 2003
Joe's newest self-titled CD is available in St. Louis in-store & online at Vintage Vinyl, or at Schuler's Books & Music in Grand Rapids.
Tour
November 19, 2003
Building a "news" section has been prompted by Eisenbraun's first mini-tour in support of the new self-titled disc. Written from April to July of 2003, this is his first commercially packaged & stamped venture, & will feature artwork by William Suk & Ryan Seth Thompson. For the recording sessions, guest musicians Juan Guarcia (lap steel, banjo; of Saturday Looks Good To Me), Josh Ippel (keyboards, knobs; of Lapel), Perry Trolard (drums; of the Dream Machine) & Elizabeth Dieleman (vocals) were invited to add their talents to Eisenbraun's thesis-driven pop songwriting & finger style acoustic guitar work. The tour, starting off at the dear alma mater in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will take a sidestep to see old friends & for house concerts on the east coast before returning to Michigan for shows in Detroit, Traverse City, Grand Rapids & Grand Haven. The tour will end back in St Louis on December 4 at Off-Broadway for the home-town CD release party.
